Well it's September in Keller and the temperature has finally started to drop down from the summer highs! We love the cooler weather and want to remind our fellow pet owners in Keller and Fort Worth that it is a great time of year to get out and take your family and dog for a walk or hike!
When you live in the city limits in DFW - sometimes it's hard to get your pet out and take a walk, sidewalks arent always available depending on your community and some areas well... you just have to drive to find a good spot to roam. It's easy to get lazy and stay hidden indoors away from the heat especially when places to walk the dog seem limited. We know...
Well, we were in the same situation, where do you go to walk the dog or get the kids out? We started looking and found out that the North Fort Worth area and Keller actually have some great places to walk! You just have to hop in the car and drive 1-3 miles... It's just as easy getting to a pet freindly park as it is to take that late afternooon trip to whataburger or sonic (yeah, guilty)...
Here are a few options if you are looking for a place to go
Bear Creek Park in Keller is a great pet freindly area to walk your dog, they have some wide open areas where it would be great to throw a frisbee or ball also! There are picnic tables and covered areas if you want to bring lunch or a snack also!
Buffalo Ridge Park just south of Keller and just off Beach street is a really nice shaded trail, we love it for hot days as the trees provide plenty of shade for you, the kids and the dog. A short ways into the trail there is a nice play area if you have kids and they want to use the slides and swings! This park runs right along Big Fossil Creek so if your dog enjoys playing in the water this is definitely a great stop.
Marine Creek Lake Reservior, if you want to take a quick drive it's just a few miles southwest of Keller on highway 820. This is a 6 mile loop around the Marine Creek Lake Reservior next to the Tarrant County Community College. It was recently completed in 2015 so the trailhead is really nice, there are benches to rest and also some workout stations along the trailway. This trail has some open areas and great shady areas to keep you cool. This trail is a runners dream or amazing for a longer family and puppy walk or "hike", if the kids have bikes feel free to bring them as the trail is bicyclist friendly. If you do the entire loop make sure you carry enough water for you and your dog (our dog usually prefers the lake water...)
So hopefully this gave you a few ideas for getting out this fall with your dog and family! We definitely want to remind you to remember to take along some poop bags and to pick up your pet waste if you do go on the trails! While most trails in the area do have trash cans to dispose of the pet waste along the route, we reccomend being prepared to pack dog poop out just in case. Picking up or poop scooping after your pet helps to make sure that every trail user has a great time and ensures that our local Keller, Fort Worth and surrounding trails stay open to the local dog owners.
Have a great, safe and happy september! Hike on!
